GIGABYTE G32QC Review

GIGABYTE is somewhat of a new player in the gaming monitor market, releasing their first gaming display, the 27″ Aorus AD27QD in early 2019. GIGABYTE has positioned its self to shake up a market dominated by brands such as ASUS and Acer by offering excellent build quality, specs and features at a competitive price. This trend continues as GIGABYTE has introduced the G32QC with an impressive stack of features and value to help all gamers ‘JOIN THE FIGHT’.

Design

The G32QC follows GIGABYTE’S gaming series style of streamline and simplistic, but don’t let this modest approach fool you. The overall size and 1500R curve are clear standouts that are complemented by a matte black with gloss accents finish that provide a subtle design touch. I’m glad GIGABYTE has followed its gaming series brief by straying away from RGB illumination, focusing on features, value, and gaming experience as paramount.

Keeping appearances in check, the ‘bezel-less’ frame houses the 31.5″ VA panel perfectly. The 1500R curve coupled with the size of the G32QC makes for an impressive addition to any setup. I was blown away with just how much presence this monitor had and quickly became a massive fan of the G32QC for these reasons alone.

The G32QC is mounted on a low-profile, height-adjustable stand that doubles as a nice headset holder. The display’s feet are on the chunky side and don’t allow swivel, despite this the monitor does provide a nice and clean look. The stand offers a great range of adjustment with 100mm of vertical movement and a tilt range from -5° +20°. Securing the G32QC to the stand does require some level of contortion, without guides to rest the monitor on, juggling the panel along with a screwdriver and screws made it a challenging task to do solo.

Cable management is taken care of by a single routing hole positioned on the lower half of the stand and does a nice job of keeping all the monitor and peripheral cables clean. Power and OSD are controlled by a single directional button, which makes navigation simple and seamless — I would have liked a dedicated on-off button, but this is not a deal breaker by any means and more of a personal preference.

Performance

The GIGABYTE G32QC packs a lot of punch for $599 AUD and comparing it to a similar level monitor such as the MSI Optix MAG322CQRV, I found it hard to justify the extra spend or the excessively long model number, especially as the G32QC offers a higher refresh rate. This is where GIGABYTE has excelled in this segment, holding a clear competitive lead when it comes to value, which is sure to please a lot of gamers.

The GIGABYTE G32QC features a QHD (2560 x 1440) non-glare, HDR400, edge-lit, 31.5″ VA panel that is capable of 165Hz refresh rate and 1ms moving picture response time. To achieve the 1ms MPRT, the included ‘Aim Stabilizer’ mode has to be enabled at the cost of Adaptive-Sync, which may discourage some buyers, but to have a monitor capable of both FreeSync Premium Pro and G-Sync for under 600 bucks is a bargain!

Moving onto the onboard monitor I/O, the G32QC features dual DisplayPort 1.2, HDMI 2.0, USB 3.0 hub with 2-ports, and a headphone jack. I’m assuming GIGABYTE has included the headphone jack as a backup due to the G32QC having no in-built speakers, but does anyone actually use their monitor’s in-built speakers in 2020?

Setting resolution and refresh was first on my list after plugging in the G32QC — For my review of the G32QC, I went with an NVIDIA GPU and found it quite easy to set the native resolution, max out the refresh rate at 165Hz, and enabled G-Sync from the NVIDIA Control Panel. But don’t worry AMD fans, the G32QC features both flavours of adaptive-sync meaning you aren’t confined to single GPU manufacturer.

After some initial configuration tuning the display’s brightness, colour, and preferences from the OSD, I felt it was necessary for my personal requirements but honestly, default settings achieve a great picture straight out of the box.

Firing up Valorant at 165Hz was simply incredible! Gaming felt buttery smooth, movement and aiming both felt very precise with no input lag. The detail was defined with excellent brightness and bold colours, black levels, and contrast also top-notch. The G32QC‘s VA panel is rated at 3‎50 cd/m2 brightness with a 3‎000:1 contrast ratio and thanks to the display’s G-Sync compatibility, there was no nasty tearing. This was my experience with everything I could throw at the G32QC; titles such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Overwatch all looked fantastic, even some old favourites were no challenge for the G32QC.

To be fair, I did notice some very minor backlight bleed in the top corners on dark colours, which common for VA panels along with some slight ghosting when scrolling webpages. I must note that I only noticed these issues when purposely looking for them and in no way affect my experience while using the monitor.

I did also spend some time trying to get the best out of HDR, but could not find a sweet spot for brightness levels vs boosted contrast in dark areas. Because of this, I prefered to leave the feature off, but keeping your expectations in line with the value of the G32QC and HDR 400 specifications, it was still a nice feature to experiment with.

Immersive Experience

GIGABYTE has matched a winning combination — brilliant 1500R curve paired with a 31.5″ panel and 16:9 aspect ratio that truly creates an immersive experience. The extra height vs an ultra-wide really fills the vertical field of vision that creates a central focal point that pairs so well with FPS gaming.

To be honest, FPS gaming counts for 90% of my usual gaming and this plays to the strengths of the G32QC. During my time testing the monitor, it gave me plenty of excuses to revisit a couple of favourites such as Age of Empires: Definitive Edition, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and The Crew 2 — Each benefited from what the G32QC offers, highlighting the fact that no matter what genre you play the G32QC won’t disappoint.

OSD Sidekick

The G32QC supports GIGABYTE’S OSD Sidekick; a Windows application providing access to the monitor’s vast array of settings. This neat addition that works with the monitors USB hub cable and makes it super easy to adjust display settings, toggle features, and update the monitor’s firmware. OSD Sidekick also lets you create hotkeys to quickly display refresh rate, adjust the picture preferences and inputs on the fly.

Summary

If you’re in the market for a mid to high-end monitor that has an excellent price-to-performance ratio and don’t want the over the top gamer aesthetics, you simply can’t go past the GIGABYTE G32QC.
