YouTube lowers video quality due to Coronavirus

Bloomberg have reported that YouTube will lower the default quality of their content to Standard Definition, starting today. This is due to the dramatic increase of viewership that pushed the current infrastructure of the service to its limit, which is ultimately due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has forced many people to self-isolate at home.

This doesn’t mean that users will be stuck at SD quality content, it simply means that if you wish to view the content in HD that you will have to manually select it, rather than YouTube defaulting to 720p.

YouTube are following Netflix’s lead who recently announced that they are lowering the bit rate of all streams by about 25 percent, including HD and UHD content. Thankfully for us Aussies, Netflix has only implemented these measures for Europe only, so far…
