PlayStation 5 to be released for Holiday 2020 season- new details released

Sony have confirmed that their next-generation console will be officially called PlayStation 5, and it’s coming sooner than you would think, just in time for the Holiday 2020 season.

A leaked dev kit of the PS5

This news comes straight from President & CEO of SIE, Jim Ryan. Jim continues to disclose information in his official PlayStation blog, revealing that the console’s new controller will feature two key new innovations – haptic feedback (replacing the rumble feature on current-gen controllers) and adaptive triggers. Jim also confirmed that the controller will also feature USB C charging and a higher-capacity battery.

Haptic feedback will allow gamers to feel more immersed in the game they’re playing. Jim uses “crashing into a wall in a race car feels much different than making a tackle on the football field” as an example. This will offer more tactile responses than the traditional controller rumble motors currently can.

Adaptive triggers (which replace L2/R2) give developers the option to “program the resistance of the triggers”. Imagine feeling the tension of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain, this is the innovation gamers want! Jim claims that the combination of adaptive triggers with haptic feedback will “produce a powerful experience that better simulates various actions“, and I couldn’t agree more!
