Overwatch Season 23 Brings back Open Queue

Overwatch Season 23

Season 23 of Overwatch has finally arrived and I think I just heard the community let out a collective sigh of relief.

Season 22 was a rough one, but looking forward we have a few hero updates, SR changes and Competitive queue options to look forward to, so let’s dive in and take a look.

Queue Changes

Starting off with the most obvious change, there are now 2 Competitive Queues to choose from:

  1. Role Queue – Same as it was before where you queue for the role you want to play and team composition is locked to 2 Tanks 2 DPS and 2 Healers. (2,2,2)
  2. Open Queue – As some of the long term players will remember Competitive queue use to be open to any team composition you would like. While this on paper sounds amazing, in the real world it typically resulted in unbalanced sides with people refusing to swap roles. 6 DPS anyone? Well, the good news is, it’s back!

So if you’re like me and fancy yourself as a bit of a flex player you now have the option to Queue for Open Queue again, finally a chance to run 3,3 or 6,6 or 1,5… the options are endless. I gotta say I have played a few games of Open Queue already and the attitude of the players seems to have shifted to a much more positive place. There is no longer the pressure of having to run a 2,2,2 comp and players seem way more open to trying out different strategies with a mixture of roles, after all, if you want 2,2,2 go play Role Queue.

SR Changes

Some major SR changes that effect the higher ranks. The highest initial SR you can now achieve is 3900, this means all top tier players will be placed in Masters at the start of each season and be forced to work their way up to Grandmaster and then top 500 skills permitting. This change is an attempt to address “many of the issues that SR Decay tried to fix, but in a more positive manner.”

Hero Updates

As always there are plenty of hero buffs and nerf, with out doubt the hardest hit is Brigitte, so I’ll save her for last.

D.VA get a few nice buffs:

Fusion Cannons

  • Movement penalty reduced from 50 to 40%

Defense Matrix

  • Cooldown reduced from 1.5 to 1 second

Micro Missiles

  • Activation delay reduced from 0.5 to 0.25 seconds

Junkrat changes appear mostly to be quality of life tweaks:

Concussion Mine

  • Trigger delay reduced from 0.156 to 0.1 seconds

RIP-Tire

  • Time to take control of Junkrat post detonation has been reduced from 1.5 to 0.9 seconds

Brigitte takes a hefty hit:

Repair Pack

  • No longer grants an additional armor health pool

Barrier Shield

  • Maximum health increased from 200 to 250
  • Regeneration rate decreased from 100 to 85 health per second
  • Cooldown when destroyed increased from 3 to 5 seconds

For me Season 23 is shaping up to be a ripper, I think the addition of the Open Queue is going to significantly change they way players approach competitive play and should help ease some of the toxicity that’s plagued Overwatch for years.
