The Overwatch League recently announced the format for its 2020 postseason and Grand Finals.
All 20 League teams will have the opportunity to qualify for the postseason. As before there will be two divisions. 13 teams will fall under the North America decisions and the remaining 7 in the Asia Division. There will be 3 tournaments: the May Melee, the Summer Showdown, and the Countdown Cup, these along with the regular-season standings will determine a teams Seed.
North America will be represented by Atlanta Reign, Boston Uprising, Dallas Fuel, Florida Mayhem, Houston Outlaws, Los Angeles Gladiators, Los Angeles Valiant, Paris Eternal, Philadelphia Fusion, San Francisco Shock, Toronto Defiant, Vancouver Titans, and Washington Justice
Asia will be represented by Chengdu Hunters, Guangzhou Charge, Hangzhou Spark, London Spitfire, New York Excelsior, Shanghai Dragons, and Seoul Dynasty
On 4 September postseason play will begin with single-elimination play-in matches between the lowest seeds in both the North America and Asia brackets. Following that, on September 6th double-elimination play begins between the winning teams from the play-in matches. The remaining lower seeds will then compete with higher seeds in double-elimination tournaments in North America and Asia the following week. Champions of the winners’ and losers’ brackets in each region will advance to a final four Grand Finals tournament.
That brings us to a final four double-elimination bracket and sets it up for the top 2 teams to compete for the League championship. To keep things fair the North America teams will travel to Asia so that all 4 teams can compete on the same server. a few weeks buffer has been included to account for health and safety.
