Last week Larian Studios released a cryptic video with nothing more than a mysterious III. Thanks to someone much smarter than myself, the source code was filled with references to Baldur’s Gate and the internet went crazy. Could Baldur’s Gate 3 really be happening? Well, it has been 19 years since the release of Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn but Larian Studios have confirmed they’re indeed developing Baldur’s Gate 3.
Baldur’s Gate 3 was officially confirmed during Google’s Stadia Connect livestream, in which a PC and Google Stadia release were announced. As expected, no release date was mentioned, except that Baldur’s Gate 3 will be released “when it’s ready”. Larian Studios have since released quite a humorous Community Update video to that gives an insight into how they were able to persuade Wizards of the Coast that they were the best studio to develop Baldur’s Gate 3.
“Baldur’s Gate III will push the boundaries of the RPG genre and offer a rich narrative with unparalleled player freedom, high-stakes decisions, unique companion characters, and memorable combat. It is Larian Studios’ biggest production ever and will be playable together with friends or as a single-player adventure.”
It’s been a long time between drinks for Baldur’s Gate fans, so it’s no surprise that the story unfortunately doesn’t pick off following the events from Shadows of Amn and will focus on a new story set in the Forgotten Realms. Baldur’s Gate III will utilize D&D 5th Edition to deliver a grand adventure filled with places to explore, stuff to experiment with, challenging combat, memorable companions, tough decisions and simply, the best RPG experience Larian Studios have ever produced. Oh, and expect plenty of cero… ceromopho… ceromophoerce? What ever it is, expect plenty of it, and if the trailer is any indication then we’ve already witness the impact it has!
