Coming in first, to nobody’s surprise, was EVO 2019‘s biggest tournament (highest number of entrants) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with a more-than-deserved spot seeing how the game has grown both in gameplay and competitively. The game is constantly growing, and even though Nintendo has been reluctant to support the tournament scene, this has never stopped Smash players to give a great showing at EVO.

In spite of the heated debate the latest DLC character Leroy generated, the game is stronger than ever, with people joining the scene constantly, and with more development coming from Banda Namco it’s a well deserved return for one of the most visually astonishing games of this generation.

If there is one series that has been tied to EVO since its very beginings, that would be Street Fighter and as expected, Street Fighter V: Champion Edition comes in at the third spot. In spite of the critics it has had over its life span, the second highest entrant game of last year’s edition is, to many, in the best spot it can be competitively, balance-wise and gameplay-wise.

Taking the fourth spot is Dragonball FighterZ. The game’s evolution may not have been as exponential as we envisioned, but that does not mean that it is not in a solid spot. The competition is fiercer than it ever has been and with some of the FGC’s greatest talents comepeting, this game promises to deliver one of the most exciting tournaments of the event.

Spot number eight goes to the second newcomer of the bunch: Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late [cl-r] (or UNICLR for short). Having the previous iteration of the series be a part of EVO 2019 main stage was already a huge milestone for the Under Night community, so surely this passion and tireless effort made the EVO team give the upcoming title a shot at the big stage.

The biggest surprise of the evening was the return of one of the greatest games both for EVO and the fighitng game genre: Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes.
This year marks the 20th anniversary for the game, and the EVO staff decided not only to include it in the main lineup, but also in a very special way: an 8 man invitational.
Four of the former EVO MVC2 champions (IFCYipes, Justin Wong, EMP Sanford Kelly and Duc Do) will be invited and will participate directly on the tournament. The other 4 entrants will participate in qualifiers as announced by MrWiz:

It was also clarified that neither of the EVO champions mentioned can participate in the qualifiers.

I am looking forward to the development of these games towards EVO 2020 , and be sure to register for any games you want to play since EVO is a part of some main tours happening throughout the year.

EVO 2020 will take place at the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada between July 31st and August 2nd .
